Outcome of Firefox Ad

is monitoring the Firefox download count, hoping to see the impact of the NYT ad. Sadly, after 5 days, he notes that "The NYT ad, and the media coverage that it has elicited, don’t seem to have had any immediate, significant effect on Firefox adoption."

I am not surprised and not sure it was money well spent: Firefox promotion is relying on the quality of the product and world of mouth. The product rocks, but making the ad was not going to change anything to its adoption rate. For the sake of comparison, have you ever seen a Google ad? Yes recently and for their Desktop Search product. In early days though, Google was competing against infoseek, excite, altavista, fast, and so on that were advertising like mad.
